Acoustic Bass Drones (12 keys, stereo tracks)
New Acoustic Arco Bass Drones: A Collaboration with Jeff Harshbarger
I'm thrilled to announce the release of a new set of practice drones, created in collaboration with my KU colleague, Jeff Harshbarger.
Jeff graciously spent an afternoon in my home studio, meticulously recording all 12 chromatic drones using his excellent acoustic bass and bow chops. Each track is contains 2 recordings of Jeff playing (overlapped) to create a seamless and full drone.
For years, I've relied on Indian classical tambura or tanpura drones for practice and teaching. However, I've long envisioned creating a set of drones that would resonate more deeply within the Jazz traditions.
The rich, resonant timbre of Jeff's bowed acoustic bass (arco) perfectly captures this vision, offering a sound that is both familiar and central to these musical styles. These new drones serve as versatile tools for both educators and practitioners.
They can be utilized for:
- Ear training exercises
- Scale and chord practice
- Melody and song exploration
- Interval recognition
- Free improvisation
- And countless other musical applications
To give you a taste of the rich, full sound these drones offer, I've included a free track in Concert C using the link below. If you find it useful, please consider supporting this project by purchasing the complete set of Acoustic Arco Bass Drones.

By incorporating these drones into your practice routine, you'll have access to a powerful tool that can help deepen your musical understanding and enhance your improvisational skills. Whether you're a student, educator, or professional musician, these drones offer a unique and valuable resource for musical growth and exploration.
Please don't share the drones, I recoded these myself and payed Jeff well for his time. I see very little profit (if any) each year from my products, my goal is to break even and create affordable educational Jazz materials :)
